L-Glutamine in an Eczema or Psoriasis healing protocol

If you’ve followed my skin healing journey at all, you know that I'm trying to address the root cause rather than just suppress symptoms. Years ago, my only main skin problem was psoriasis. More recently, I'm dealing with severe eczema as well. I find it too odd that I'm dealing with both conditions simultaneously, which has led me to suspect a gut-related root cause.

Why is my immune system reacting like this in the first place?

If the root cause is gut-related (which I strongly suspect in my case), then repairing the gut lining becomes foundational. That’s where L-Glutamine comes in.

Why I’m Taking L-Glutamine

Right now, I take 5 grams (1 scoop) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This is a core part of the gut repair protocol I'm following.

This is the exact powder I’m using:

👉 L-Glutamine Powder

I mix it in water, drink it, and wait about 20–30 minutes before eating.

The Gut-Skin Connection

Here’s the simplified chain I’m operating under:

  1. The gut lining becomes compromised (sometimes called “leaky gut”).
  2. Bacterial fragments and toxins pass into the bloodstream.
  3. The immune system reacts.
  4. Chronic immune activation shows up in the skin.

Whether you call it increased intestinal permeability or something else, the concept is the same:

If the barrier is weak, the immune system stays on high alert.

And eczema and psoriasis are immune-driven conditions.

What L-Glutamine Actually Does

L-Glutamine is the primary fuel source for intestinal cells (enterocytes).

Your gut lining turns over rapidly. Those cells need energy to regenerate. L-Glutamine is one of their preferred fuels.

Research suggests it may:

  • Support tight junction integrity
  • Help reduce intestinal permeability
  • Support immune balance in the gut
  • Reduce inflammatory signaling

If my gut lining is compromised, this seems like a logical tool to test.

Where It Fits in a Healing Protocol

If I break healing into phases, it looks like this:

Phase 1 – Calm the Fire

  • Remove trigger foods
  • Reduce inflammatory load
  • Stabilize symptoms

Phase 2 – Repair the Barrier

  • L-Glutamine
  • Zinc
  • Collagen
  • Butyrate
  • Mucosal support

Phase 3 – Rebuild the Ecosystem

  • Probiotics (if tolerated)
  • Prebiotics (carefully)
  • Fiber (when ready)

L-Glutamine clearly belongs in Phase 2: Repair the Barrier.

Should You Take L-Glutamine on an Empty Stomach?

From everything I’ve read and experienced, yes — empty stomach is ideal.

Here’s why:

  • It competes with other amino acids for absorption.
  • Taking it with protein may reduce how much reaches intestinal cells.
  • On an empty stomach, it’s more likely to be used for gut repair instead of muscle metabolism.

That’s why I take it first thing in the morning, but some people also take a second dose before bed.

Should I Be Taking More Than 5g Per Day?

This is the big question.

I currently take 5g once daily.

Typical supplemental ranges are:

  • 5g daily (conservative baseline)
  • 5g twice daily (more aggressive gut repair protocol)
  • Some protocols go up to 10–15g daily short-term

Would twice daily lead to “maximum healing”?

Not necessarily.

More isn’t always better. Healing isn’t linear.

In many gut-repair protocols, 5g twice per day (morning + evening) is common for 8–12 weeks. After that, people reassess.

I’m personally starting with 5g daily and evaluating:

  • Skin inflammation
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Overall immune reactivity

If I plateau, I may experiment with adding a second 5g dose before bed.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

This isn’t a quick-fix supplement.

Gut lining turnover happens over days to weeks.

Most protocols suggest:

  • 4–8 weeks minimum
  • Sometimes 8–12 weeks for meaningful repair

If the root cause truly involves gut permeability, improvements would likely be gradual — not overnight.

Why I Think It’s Worth Testing

If eczema and psoriasis are immune conditions…

And if the gut is a major immune organ…

And if barrier dysfunction can chronically stimulate the immune system…

Then supporting gut barrier repair makes logical sense.

My Current L-Glutamine Protocol

  • 5g (1 scoop)
  • First thing in the morning
  • On an empty stomach
  • Wait 20–30 minutes before eating

I’ll continue tracking skin flares, digestive changes, and inflammation markers over time.
